ThermiVa treats vaginal dryness, burning, painful intercourse, vaginal laxity, and urinary incontinence. The best part of the treatment is that it is non-surgical, with no hormone treatment and no down time.

What Causes Vaginal Dryness?

Normally, the vaginal epithelium (vaginal walls) are naturally lubricated by the mucosal layer of the vagina. The hormone estrogen helps maintain the mucosa, which aids in preserving the elasticity, thickness and health of the vaginal lining. During menopause, a woman’s estrogen production begins to decline, reducing the amount of normal moisture in vaginal tissue, causing the vagina to thin and lose elasticity. Decreased estrogen levels can be due to multiple reasons, including, but not limited to:

  • Premature ovarian failure
  • Surgical menopause (due to removal of ovaries)
  • Hormonal issues
  • Menopause
  • Chemotherapy or radiation treatment

Relation to Vaginal Dryness

Vaginal dryness is a common symptom of vaginal atrophy. Vaginal atrophy is an inflammatory process of the vagina, accompanied by thinning and dryness of the vaginal tissue. It is most commonly seen in menopausal women, due to reduced estrogen levels. As a woman’s body produces less estrogen, the tissues of the vagina and vulva are often affected, leading to more fragile tissue, from thinning, drying, and decreased elasticity. In addition to vaginal dryness, other symptoms of vaginal atrophy include:

  • Vaginal discomfort
  • Vaginal or vulvar itching/burning
  • Decreased lubrication
  • Painful intercourse

Problems Caused by Vaginal Dryness

Vaginal dryness is believed to affect millions of women, with one in three postmenopausal women suffering from these common issues. Vaginal dryness due to atrophy can have an immense impact on a woman’s life, causing pain with intercourse, urinary symptoms, as well as nonspecific vaginal discomfort. It is not uncommon for women with vaginal dryness to experience sexual dysfunction because of painful intercourse, along with diminished sensation and lower sex drive. Younger women and peri-menopausal woman may also experience periods of vaginal dryness.

While vaginal dryness does not produce serious medical consequences, it should not be dismissed if the symptoms are creating stress for the patient, as there are many solutions available. Renewal Cosmetic Gynecology can help you determine the best approach to treat your concerns.

Solutions

Many women have either tried estrogen therapy with no improvement or are unable to take estrogen. Renewal Cosmetic Gynecology offers ThermiVa, a non-surgical and completely non-invasive procedure that helps correct vaginal dryness and vaginal atrophy. ThermiVa uses radiofrequency energy to stimulate collagen production without the use of hormones. The collagen improves the health of the tissue, restores vaginal mucosa, and tightens the vaginal walls.

Renewal recommends a series of three treatments booked a month apart for optimum results. Many patients report an improvement in vaginal moisture and lubrication after the first vaginal dryness treatment, with the greatest results after the series is completed. Additionally, ThermiVa addresses mild to moderate stress urinary incontinence and can enhance the appearance of the vulva (exterior vaginal area).
